Is TV Better Than The Cinema?

Going to the cinema has always been a much loved activity of the masses, but does the convenience of the TV viewing outweigh the experience of a night at the movies? With the economic climate dictating what we do in our spare time, more and more of us are opting to spend our hard earned money upgrading our TV technology instead of blowing it on a night out at the cinema. With improved equipment and, of course, microwavable popcorn, the popular Saturday night tradition can now be easily recreated in the comfort of your own home. Say goodbye to the loud mouth guy in the row behind who constantly fidgets and forgets to turn off his mobile phone and hello to pausing, rewinding and volume control!

With the invention of High Definition TV, watching movies is edging closer to the cinematic experience. An HD picture is up to five times more detailed than a regular picture and, when coupled with the latest surround sound technology, can immerse the viewer into their favourite TV show or film, as if they were in the front row at the cinema. New sleek flat screen televisions have provided us with the look of the movie screen and, with the sets ranging from 13 to 65 inches in size, they can feel just as big. For dedicated cinema lovers there are lots of products on the market that can truly transform your living room into your own personal theatre, and if a wide screen TV just isn’t going to cut it then a projector is a must.

It’s not only technology that’s leading us away from the cinemas; movie stars are increasingly leaving behind the glitz and glamour of the silver screen to take lead roles in TV dramas and sitcoms. Wider exposure to global audiences has lured some of Hollywood’s best loved film actors to the small screen, from Glenn Close in damages to Martin Sheen in the West Wing, no star is beyond a cameo role in the latest hit sitcom. It’s not only actors that are making the transition, some of the hottest movie directors in the world are downing tools on feature films and making the hop over to television. Steven Spielberg began his career in TV and recently directed ‘Band of Brothers’ a successful HBO show and even Tarantino has his hand in TV, writing and directing episodes of ER, Alias and CSI.

With newly recruited movie stars, bigger screens, surround sound and the new HD box the days of bad picture, reception and sound are over. TV is no longer regarded as the poor man’s theatre and is slowly taking over the movies in the entertainment hierarchy.
