The O.c.: Tate Donovan Discusses ‘damages’ Finale and Decline of ‘the O.c.’

Diehard fans of the Fox network’s teen drama television series The O.C. were left dismayed when the curtain dropped at the start of this year on their favorite show, just last February. Fortunately, several of the cast members from The O.C. have continued on to newer acting projects, among them Tate Donovan, who previously played the role of Jimmy Cooper in the show. Donovan currently appears in another drama series, this time on FX, titled Damages. The new show revolves around the work of a corporate lawyer named Patty Hewes, as she exerts a lot of effort to in a battle against the corrupt and illegitimate business practices of Arthur Frobisher.

Hewes is played by Emmy Award-winning actress Glenn Close, while Frobisher is portrayed by Ted Danson. Donovan’s own character in Damages is named Tom Shayes, and he is an associate of Hewes. During an interview, Donovan stated that while a second season for Damages had not yet been finalized or at least announced by FX, plot threads such as the litigation against Frobisher and the investigation into the death of David Connor would be resolved during the season finale. He also said that there would be a strong setup for a potential second season.

On the other hand, Donovan also mused about his previous work on The O.C., noting how ratings for the show gradually plummeted after his character of Cooper was written out from the storyline. He attributes this to the focus of the series shifting from a family dynamic and concentrating more on the troubles of the younger characters. He stated that he would like to direct a future episode of Damages, just as he did for The O.C. Donovan was also largely positive about his experience of working with FX, saying that his fellow cast members Glenn Close and Rose Byrne were fun to be with.
