The Big Chill is a 1983 American dramedy film directed by Lawrence Kasdan, starring Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt, Kevin Kline, Mary Kay Place, Meg Tilly, and JoBeth Williams. It is about a group of baby boomer college friends who reunite after 15 years due to the death of a friend. Kevin Costner was cast as the dead character Alex, but all of the scenes showing his face were cut. It has been compared to John Sayles’s Return of the Secaucus 7. The Big Chill was filmed entirely on location in Beaufort, South Carolina and was shot at the same antebellum home used as a location for The Great Santini. The soundtrack features 10 Motown classics, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “My Girl” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”.
Last week, the Commerce Department reported builders across the country started work at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 529,000 new homes and apartments last month. That’s a drop of 4.3 percent from November and the slowest pace since October 2009. Across the country, builders broke ground on 587,600 new homes in 2010 following 554,000 new homes in 2009. The two years were the worst years for new home construction since 1959, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. A healthy economy generates about 1 million new housing starts a year, according to The Associated Press. The national economy generated about 2 million housing starts back in 2005, the height of the housing boom. Wilbraham developer and resident Anthony Carnevale said he built just one new home in 2010. He’s got a 26-lot subdivision approved, but neighbors have appealed that approval.
The television show thirtysomething was influenced by The Big Chill. However, this was not before the movie was directly adapted to television in CBS’ short-lived 1985 dramedy Hometown. The film was parodied by T. Coraghessan Boyle in his short story “The Little Chill.” The story begins, “Hal had known Rob and Irene, Jill, Harvey, Tottle, and Pesky since elementary school, and they were all forty going on sixty.”
