Was the movie “The Big Chill” realistic?? Pregnancy?
I really liked the movie, but I found the whole “I’m 34 years old, I’ve been dating for 20 years, I’m a lawyer, and I need to get pregnant right now before I’m too old thing a little strange. And then, her friend let’s her husband impregnate her! Does this stuff really happen? I mean, other than on Jerry Springer?
If I was the guy, I would have jumped at the opportunity. Sorry, Glenn Close just doesn’t do it for me, at all.
Wow, I didn’t know Alex was Kevin Costner, I thought he was shorter, I may need to take another look, maybe it was pay back. I do realize that it was 1983 so sperm banks weren’t that popular but there was adoption, and is 34 really that old?
Maybe I’m wrong. I heard that Japan’s population is dying because the women are waiting too long to have babies because they are all so career oriented. Couples are even getting paid to have babies, crazy stuff.
Wait a minute, it never shows Alex’s face does it?
Her friend – Glenn Close– had been having an affair with the guy that died (Kevin Costner!) It was a way for her husband to “even the score” so to speak and do her friend a favour at the same time.
I’m not sure if it is really realistic from today’s point of view, but when I went to see it in the 80′s, I was deeply moved by the whole idea.
Remember that sperm banks were probably not well known, and the idea of having a one night stand with a person you know and love (as a friend) sounds much better than a test tube!
They were much more adult about the whole thing than the Jerry Springer show. So, yes, it probably could have happened, but The Big Chill was just a movie!
-edit-
Yes, the “dead” body you see at the beginning is Kevin Costner. He was supposed to be in the movie and have real scenes, but was cut out of the film.
Also, in the 80′s single person adoption wasn’t really done. It’s much more common now, but back then they didn’t want to encourage a single person to adopt.
